About this event
This three (3) hour diversity workshop will explore clinical considerations in working with South Asian American clients. Topics include acculturation issues, generational and historical trauma-related factors, and other cultural influences on mental health. Discrimination and current socio-political variables, as well as barriers to treatment and ethical considerations will also be explored. The seminar should be viewed as a starting point for further self-study on working with South Asian Americans and other BIPOC individuals.
- Practitioners will develop a solid foundation for understanding South Asian American mental health concerns
- Attendees will be able to identify major cultural factors that impact mental health for South Asian Americans
- Participants will learn about barriers to treatment and ethical considerations in therapy
Presenter - Neetha Devdas, PhD
Dr. Neetha Devdas is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Hobson Wildenthal Honors College at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she teaches undergraduate psychology courses and creates and implements mental health and wellness programming for the department. Dr. Devdas is also an adjunct lecturer in the School of Behavior and Brain Sciences at UTD teaching a graduate course in trauma-informed care, as well as a part-time lecturer with the Archer Center in Washington, D.C., creating and implementing programming aimed at improving political wellness. Dr. Devdas has been a licensed psychologist in Texas since 2012 and has had a private practice since 2017. Prior to her time in private practice and academia, Dr. Devdas worked in university counseling for eight years. Clinical and teaching interests include theory and practice of trauma-informed care and South Asian American acculturation concerns. Dr. Devdas has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Woman's University. She is a native of Dallas and is second-generation Indian American.

The location for this IN-PERSON workshop has changed from Scottish Rite Hospital to a more central location. The event will now be held at the NDBT Tower - Tower Conference Room 210. Upon entering the parking lot, follow the signs for Guest Parking up the ramp to the top level of the parking deck located on the south side of the building. You can access the building directly from the upper parking deck level. This is the second floor of the building where the conference room is located.
Once inside, these are the directions to the conference room:
1) Enter the building through the double doors from the upper parking deck.
2) Before reaching the elevators, you will see a sign on your right hand side directing you to the conference room.
3) Walk down that hallway until you reach Tower Conference Room 210 at the very end of the next hallway.
Check-in starts at 8:45 am, and light breakfast options will be provided before the event. Workshop starts at 9:00 am. Professional development/CEUs will be provided at the time of the event.
Psychologists, LPAs, and LSSPs: This activity qualifies for 3.0 hours of professional development in the area of Diversity. Dallas Psychological Association, Inc. (DPA) maintains responsibility for the program and its content as per TSBEP rule 461.11(c)(2)(A). Counselors: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in the area of Diversity. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rule 681.142. Social Workers: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in the area of Diversity. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers rules 781.509 and 781.511(a)-(c). Marriage and Family Therapists: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in the area of Diversity. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists rule 801.264. For all license categories, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance. Prior to receiving an attendance certificate, an evaluation must be completed. Please retain the certificate of completion and use as proof of completion when required.
