Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice: Applications and Ethical Challenges

Virtual Workshop Description
The use of artificially intelligent systems, machines, and programs in daily clinical practice is upon us. This workshop will provide the foundational knowledge necessary for practitioners to engage in additional learning opportunities, advocacy, and critical clinical decision making related to the use of AI in professional psychological practice. During the first part of the workshop, participants will learn what artificial intelligence (AI) is and how it works. The presenters will then review existing and developing applications of AI to professional psychological practice. In the second part of the workshop, the presenters will explain and discuss the ethical challenges of using AI. Generous opportunities for Q&A with presenters and discussion among participants will enrich our understanding of the impending technological transformation that faces our profession.

Michael C. Gottlieb, PhD practices forensic psychology in Dallas. He is Board Certified in Family Psychology [ABPP] and is a Fellow of the American Psychology/Law Society as well as four other divisions of APA. He is a Clinical Professor at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he teaches professional ethics and has completed terms on the American Psychological Associations’ Ethics Committee and its Committee on Professional Practice and Standards. He has written or co-written over eighty peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and sits on the editorial board of four scholarly journals.
Matthew Hutnyan is a Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology and Intern at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He serves as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Interventional Psychiatry Program and assists with research projects involving a variety of clinical populations, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. He has an interest in the ethical and practical complexities of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and their use in clinical settings. Matt graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Health and Society. He currently serves on the Science Subcommittee of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) and is involved in various committees and student organizations at UT Southwestern.

Professional development/CEUs will be provided at the time of the event.
Psychologists, LPAs, and LSSPs: This activity qualifies for 3.0 hours of professional development in Ethics. Dallas Psychological Association, Inc. (DPA) maintains responsibility for the program and its content as per TSBEP rule 461.11(c)(2)(A). Counselors: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Ethics. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rule 681.142. Social Workers: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Ethics. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers rules 781.509 and 781.511(a)-(c). Marriage and Family Therapists: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Ethics. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists rule 801.264. For all license categories, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance. Prior to receiving an attendance certificate, an evaluation must be completed. Please retain the certificate of completion and use as proof of completion when required.
