UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic: Providing Student and Resident Training and Reduced Fee Treatment
DPA would like to take this opportunity to share one of the resources available to the community at UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic is an integral part of the Clinical Psychology graduate program and the Psychiatry Residency program at UTSW. Through this clinic, therapists-in-training provide individual and group psychotherapy services to adults and couples (age = 18) with various emotional difficulties or mental illness.
UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic operates under the guidance of Alyson Nakamura M.D., Medical Director and Alex Foxwell, Ph.D., Psychology Director. Both doctoral clinical psychology students/interns, and psychiatry residents conduct treatment under close supervision by a licensed clinician. Patients seen for individual therapy through the UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic have access to evaluation for medication or medication management. In addition, psychological evaluations and neuropsychological evaluations are provided by psychology students and interns through the clinic.
In addition to providing excellent training for future psychologists and psychiatrist, UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic provides a low-cost option for individuals who could benefit from treatment but for whom insurance coverage or private practice cost is a barrier to receiving psychological services. The clinic implements a flat rate of $15 per 1-hour treatment session, $30/month for group, and $30/hour for evaluations. If you would like to know more about the services provided, or have a patient whom you would like to refer, please contact the UT Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic at 214-648-7012.
The University of North Texas Psychology Clinic
The University of North Texas Psychology Clinic provides professional, confidential psychological services to community members in the Denton and greater DFW area. As a non-profit clinic serving the community for over 50-years, the Psychology Clinic offers therapy and assessment services at reduced cost determined by household income and number of people supported by that income. All clinicians are doctoral students in UNT’s Counseling or Clinical Psychology doctoral programs and are supervised by licensed psychologists. Our clinic, at present, serves older adolescent through adult age clients and can provide assessment and therapy services. We are problem-focused in our approach and do time-limited interventions. We do not have session limits (though we do not provide ongoing supportive care once goals are met) and will create individualized treatment plans, based on evidence-based approaches to care, for client concerns. In-person and telehealth options are available. Our clinic is open Monday-Thursday from 10am-8pm and on Fridays from 10am-5pm.
While we strive to serve as many clients with diverse concerns as possible, there are some issues that are not a good fit for our clinic. Clients who need or are prone to needing emergency services, and individuals needing substantial case management and/or on-going medication adjustments are generally not appropriate for the Clinic. Clients who suffer from primary substance use concerns, are not stable on medication for bipolar disorder or psychotic disorders, are seeking legal or custody evaluations, or have concerns with self-injury or recent suicidality are also generally not appropriate for our clinic. Our clinic does evaluations for learning and attention concerns, differential diagnosis, and memory evaluation. We are not able to do autism evaluations at present.
If interested in services, clients can call (940) 565-2631 or come in-person to complete a screening. We are located at 1611 W. Mulberry Street in Denton, TX. Upon calling or coming in-person, clients will complete a screening interview. When a clinician is available, they will then be invited for a free intake evaluation which is utilized to determine fit for services. If it is determined that we can serve their needs and the individual wishes to continue, future evaluation or treatment sessions will be set at the rate determined based on our sliding fee scale.
At the UNT Psychology Clinic, we strive to adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, respect, and multicultural competence. In the clinic, our faculty, student-clinicians, and staff members honor, value, and appreciate diversity from all members of the community. We strive to provide quality services that are sensitive to all types of cultural and individual differences, including: age, race/ethnicity, sex, gender identity, nationality, socioeconomic status, military background, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, disability, and other valued components of diversity. We work to create an environment which promotes awareness and acceptance of unique individual differences, and we strive to provide culturally relevant and appropriate services in accordance to each client's personal preferences and needs.
